  • Eat your heart out JP - "modern stereo" in a hot rod

A little trolling of the board's creator...while I tend to love the bluetooth dongle attached to the Frankfurt in my targa, the coupe is a track car and M471 clone, so no radio, and one needs the ability to remove everything for track sessions. While I won't use this set up for when the car is fully tarted up as a M471 clone, for now it is pretty amazing. Soon, I will not have any hearing as between my factory sport exhaust and the two JBL speakers, the car gets very loud.

    The set-up is:
    1. A carbone wireless charging pocket - mounted in the driver footwell where the pockets go on normal coupes' carpets (sorry no photo). I have the RS lightweight felt, so it was an easy install and you can't see it unless you are peering with your head in the footwell.
    2. Two JBL charge bluetooth speakers, mounted to my roll bar via fire extinguisher quick disconnects. I chose the JBL charges because they last 10 hours, so weeks go by without needing to charge. They sync with each other and the phone pretty quickly after turning them on. You can also charge a phone or tablet with them, which is nice if you're at the track and your phone battery is getting low. They are very loud and the sound is more than good enough when competing with my engine.
    3. One marine USB port, which is mounted to my radio delete plate.
    4. A spotify car thing, which attaches via rare earth magnets to radio delete plate (I glued the rare earth magnets to the backside of the radio delete plate). The car thing allows you to control your phone from the dash, which gives you full access to spotify, plus volume control (the big knob on the right). They've been upgrading the thing in the past few months and I'm hopeful it will start to display Waze, but one of the nice things of this set-up (which is the same with any bluetooth connection to your phone) is you can set your destination with Waze and get the audio prompts. I don't really use it for directions, rather the head's up on the 5-0 which makes it an essential compliment to a radar detector. Yes, you have to be a spotify subscriber...
For sound, this set-up is better than the factory dash speaker. In my targa, I have a rennline clock iPhone mount, so I have full iPhone control & navigation. This definitely looks better though. Some pics...

At rest...yes, I know the radio delete plate is a little ghetto without the leatherette...

The car thing just sticks to the delete plate where I glued the rare earth magnets in back.

And the set-up at work...(I have a tiny USB cable on order to make it more seamless).

And with the power on, the USB port has a voltage meter. I find this somewhat annoying, but it is fine - at least you know what is going through your system and if your battery is bad.

And then the JBLs in back...you do have to plan ahead when mounting these as access is limited if you have a roll cage plus a fixed passenger profi and a moveable passenger profi. I have been known to get lazy and just put them in the rear seat buckets, but again, the charge speaker has so much power I go weeks between charges and leave them mounted to the cage.

Ha! You're in the right place where trolling is not only allowed but encouraged.

So much cool stuff out there now and glad you found a setup that works for you. Curious about that Carbone charging pocket. I'll need to look closer at that when I have some time.

JP, thanks for this great new forum.

What is your setup for "modern stereo"?

Oh, he likes the bluetooth adapter plugged into a switchable AUX line, plugged into the back of a Frankfurt, so that he can toggle the radio on and off. I just like the straight bluetooth adapter as I don't listen to the radio (so when I turn on my radio, it automatically connects to my phone). For a period correct car, either option is 100% the way to go. I think his set-up you can get at AutoAtlanta, the bluetooth connector I like is on eBay from eastern Europe.

The carbone thing is nice? Question is whether you could hide it in the factory carpets' pocket.

You're welcome! Thanks for being here!

Like Rick said, most of my cars are original so I tend to try and keep them that way with this setup:

          https://early911registry.com/forums/...r-an-early-car

That said, I have a couple hotrods, and many later cars that I've done systems in, but I really mix and match depending on the specific car. I do have some favorite components:

If I'm going to use a modern head unit, I really prefer that it looks at least somewhat period correct. Nothing worse than a disco-light Alpine in the dash of an air-cooled 911 (for me at least).

Lately I've been using the modern version of the Blaupunkt Bremen SQR 46.

          https://www.crutchfield.com/S-GxnEWq...QR-46-DAB.html

Looks great in the dash and has all the modern features. UI is a bit funky but overall I've been pleased.

I've also done a couple cars with the Porsche Classic unit:

          https://www.suncoastparts.com/product/SKUCLASSIC.html

Another solid choice but probably overpriced. If you're buying it for the nav, don't bother. The screen is small and the navigation on your phone is much better.

If you're on a budget, this is a solid choice:

          https://www.amazon.com/VDO-Continent...df_B08D2R48HZ/

Good bluetooth and looks great in the dash.

If you want CD, be patient and hunt down one of these:

          https://www.amazon.com/MBVI-Nakamich...r_arp_d_pb_opt

This is probably my favorite car stereo of all time. 6-disc changer in dash, classic looks, audiophile sound, and a rear aux input for a bluetooth dongle. I have this in my '87 Carrera with Focals up front, Polk's in the rear, an Alpine amp and an under-seat subwoofer. Prett much invisible and sounds incredible. They still come up on eBay from time to time.

For front speakers, I'm very partial to the Focal separates. Even the 5.25 setup provides excellent sound:

          https://www.crutchfield.com/S-YhcsKd...l-ES-130K.html

The downside is they can be a PITA to mount. They're not small.

I've also really liked the stuff from JL Audio A step down in price but only slightly less quality:

          https://www.crutchfield.com/S-Su3ege...io-C2-525.html

For a budget build, and for easy mounting, I LOVE these:

          https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...rch_asin_title

          and even these:

          https://www.amazon.com/CT-Sounds-BIO...ef=dp_prsubs_2

and these too if you want to split the difference in price:

          https://www.amazon.com/Morel-Maximo-...69/ref=sr_1_20

If you're doing a later car, or adding speakers to the rear deck, I only use these:

          https://www.amazon.com/Polk-Audio-4x...df_B000P0NJOO/

3 reasons: a) they're very slim and easy to fit under the panel, b) they're VERY durable and you don't want to be changing these out if you don't have to, and c) the sound is fine - you're really only looking for some fill back here anyway.

In several of my cars I've also done a small, powered subwoofer under the passenger seat: I keep it low and take time to really dial it in but done right these are suprisingly good and really fill out the sound:

          https://www.amazon.com/JBL-BassPro-U...AU/ref=sr_1_14

          https://www.amazon.com/NVX-Amplified...JN6/ref=sr_1_5

There are lots of different makers/models of these and I wouldn't be that picky assuming you're just looking to fill out the lower end.

The final piece is amplification. But that's gotten very easy with even the budget brands having stepped up their game in recvent years. I'm partial to Alpine and JL Audio just because they're bulletproof and easy to work with but often we're dealing with size constraints and I've used a bunch of different stuff based primarily on the ability to hide it. There's a ton of stuff out there that can be hidden behind the passenger pedal board and I wouldn't hesitate to use most of it:

          https://www.amazon.com/NVX-Amplified...JN6/ref=sr_1_5

          Apologies for the stream-of-consciousness post.

If you don't mind not listening to the radio (or turning off bluetooth on your phone to listen to radio), this bad boy is what I have in my "period correct" targa. Just turn the radio on, and play whatever you want. One dongle, plugged into the back of the radio, which is totally hidden (I used a 3M adhesive pad to stick it up to the body behind the stereo). No wires, no switches, no fuss.

            https://www.ebay.com/itm/15348614678...sAAOSw0Hpc2GTl

If you go to my instagram
rick71T there is a video where I spin out doing autocross. You can see how I have the phone mounted on the Rennline mount, and the sound is legit from the factory speaker. Roof off, wheels screaming, music is audible up to about 5k? That's living.

How is it powered? Does it draw power from the radio?

yes. just one plug, into the back of the frankfurt. makes a little beep when you turn on the stereo and it pairs with your phone. It would take an astute and over-eager concours judge to know I have bluetooth in my targa. no messy wires, just what you see in that ebay listing. he's raised his prices though!

That's interesting. I wish he did one with a switch as I still use my radio from time to time. Have you tested this when the phone is unpaired? Does the radio work then? In other words, does it feature reliable auto-switching? Most of the switchless units I've tested claim to have auto-switching but I've found it to be unreliable.

I also have the bluetooth adapter as a direct line into the DIN port of my US frankfurt, connects automatically with the Iphone ….output either via the new „Koenig“ loudspeaker ( they do deliver the speakers to porsch classic)….or if in need for more bass -> jbl direct bluetooth..

Finally got around to creating a video of the miracle. Fair disclosure, this is just me walking up to my car. No prep. Sorry for the fuel pump noise and my breathing (I have the gopro set to the rear mic). I open the door, adjust the seat back, put the iPhone on the rennline holder. Plug the rennline holder into the cigarette lighter, and then turn the car on, etc. Pretty seamless. The two beeps are the bluetooth dongle turning on, and then connecting to my iphone. You basically have a modern infotainment system with a 100% period correct car other than the rennline mount.
