  • RHD 1967 911S coupe questions

Having obtained a 1967 RHD 911S coupe a couple of months ago I have been working through a number of jobs to correct a few details from a restoration undertaken about ten years ago by the previous owner.

The car currently does not have a handbrake boot although it does have a leather gear lever boot; I had assumed this was maybe an aftermarket part fitted by the previous owner, however, having discussed with another UK based owner of a RHD 67S his car also has what looks to be an identical leather gear lever boot together with a matching leather handbrake boot! So was this a common thing on some 67S, or maybe just RHD, or maybe just UK RHD?! (There is no mention on the Kardex of either car)

To complicate matters even more my handbrake has a hand throttle on the left hand side (like my '68 car had), again interested to know of any other 67S examples?

Any thoughts or known original comparisons would be gratefully received.

    Thanks
    Tim

I was quite sure '67 boots were rubber until I read your post. Maybe soterik can chime in.

Ok, an opinion... My guess would be that Porsche wanted to upgrade the 67S vs the base 67 911, and visually the leather brake boot and leather shift knob add a bit of "class" to the interior, and perhaps they were looking at the Jags and Mercedes and though this would be a nice visual touch.

The leather brake boot and shift boot had only been gone for a few months, and I'm certain they still had more than a few around. Note that while people will say that Porsche is frugal and would use up a part before they moved on to another... I say that's a bunch of crap, as they had to have parts on shelf for repairs, and maintenance for previously sold cars. Particularly only a few months later.

Hand throttle? Well, that's interesting, talked to JP about this and he said he owns a 68 912 that had a dealer addition of a hand throttle. So, perhaps that happened to this car as well? Personally I've not seen one in the 67S's I've owned and currently own (it's quite a few....).

Picture of your leather brake boot?

Well things are getting interesting now, received these two photos yesterday of another UK RHD 67S (Vin 305481S), in conjunction with the photos from the car with the tan interior above (Vin 305457S) plus my car (Vin 307943S) having the leather gear shift boot it is looking like the leather boots were original fitment; the question now is was this a RHD thing, a UK RHD thing, or maybe just an AFN (UK agent) thing?
