I was curious about accident rates in the U.S. as opposed to more civilized countries. Here is the mortality rate per 100,000 population per The World Bank:
Australia 5
Belgium 6
Canada 5
Austria 5
Denmark 4
Finland 4
France 5
Germany 4
Ireland 3
Israel 4
Italy 5
Japan 4
Netherlands 4
Norway 2
Singapore 2
Spain 4
Sweden 3
Switzerland 2
UK 3
United States 13
Mexico 13
Pakistan 13
I didn't find this surprising at all. Anyone care to speculate why the automobile accident mortality rate in the U.S.is so high? I have lots of ideas.
Cheers,
John

The reason underdeveloped countries have such a high rate is due to the use of public transportation. One bus accident can take out 50-70 people.
As for the US, lets face it, DUI isn't as strictly punished as in Europe. I lost my sister to a drunk driver who had multiple offenses. He got no time and a brief suspension even though he killed two people and had an empty bottle of vodka in the car.
Guess what, the blood sample was inadmissible as it was taken by the ambulance personnel while he was unconscious.

BTW: I believe the huge Hispanic demographic in the U.S. isn't helping our stats. It is amazing to me how often I read accident reports involving Hispanics where occupants were killed because they were unrestrained. Someone PLEASE tell me why this people group, generally speaking (I'm painting with a very broad brush.) don't/won't wear seat belts. Anytime I ask this simple question people usually feign outrage and call me a racist. Ok... call me a racist but please answer the freaking question!

The Jalopnik comments pretty much summed all thoughts up. (The "rich douchebags who do this stuff" being a popular theme.)
While I'm guilty of airing equipment out on a desolate stretch or two in my life, there's always a measure of caution: I don't do it with other cars in sight and NO PASSENGERS. Unfortunately these "rallies" foster an environment to show off and go beyond limits of good sense and physics. At some point this driver ran out of talent and made a life-ending choice and mistake. Go to the track if you want to explore your abilities and car's limits.
Before doing something this stupid evaluate the risks BEFORE you get caught up in the heat of the moment when ego surpasses all common sense and respect for other humans. And don't be a passenger unless you know the driver exceptionally well!

Frank, how about train/car interfaces gone wrong? I mean, how does a woman on a scooter drive into a train?
I think the number is now 64 deaths in three years.
"Brightline is averaging about one death for every 33,000 miles its trains travel. Among railroads that travel at least 100,000 miles per year,
the next worst rate is one death per every 101,000 miles"
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/brightl...tality-linked/
In Brightline's defense, they've done everything they can to educate the public. Some deaths were suicides, but most of the rest a result of stupidity.Sooner or later, someone else will own them all...

I'm inclined to believe it has more to do with Florida being the largest insane asylum in the U.S. versus any other factor.
