  • Green Raw Deal

This week is very special for me; like watching a baby giraffe fall out of its mother's vagina. Hopefully JP's efforts will be rewarded and the end result will be a place where we can be ourselves, share our vocations, hobbies, and passions. Enough of the mushy... it's time for me to nestle into my own womb: Off Topic.

Imagine "The McLoughlin Group". (Absolutely LOVED that show when John McLoughlin was the host! The McLaughlin Group - SNL - YouTube)

Issue #1!! The Green Raw Deal.

Ours is a dinosaur-powered hobby. Will a political agenda that was originated by a bartender really gain enough traction to adversely affect our pursuit of rolling delights?

Naw, even with the current world market for crude, gasoline is the least of a car enthusiast's worries although it sure would be nice to see ethanol subsidies go away.

    Elinor? Wrong!!
Sooner or later, someone else will own them all...

Frank, said bartender is a perfect representation of her parties symbol. I swear, everytime I see her likeness I cannot get an ass, errr, donkey, out of my mind.

I agree with Bullet, I don’t think we’ll experience what the socialists truly want, at least in what time we have left on this globe.

I went to a car show here in KC last weekend. It was primarily high hp (700+) retro rods and p/u’s. I took the average age UP by decades. There were thousands of youth (25-35) there, a lot with their kids, and at least 500 cars. Not a single Pissous or Tesla in sight. It was awesome to see. Our hobby (carbon footprint cars) has hope and I left encouraged.

I got a survey from Porsche North America, I’m sure developed by the motherland, They were trying to gauge my interest in the possibility of ever purchasing an 911EV.
My answers were all emphatically no. The truth is, I’m not their target audience anymore.

I’m sure it will happen and they will be insanely fast but in my opinion, they will have no soul.

Russ and Doug, my potentially myopic observation is that affluent nouveau Porsche collectors are attracted to the Taycan because it gets them a chip in the green game to satisfy employees and car fluid neighbors AND helps their conscience offset the thirst for a huge carbon footprint. (And because the 0-100 performance is breathtaking and they’re priced right.) However, most of my informal surveys of REAL collectors and enthusiasts (everyone HERE) indicates
        WE.
        DON’T.
        CARE.

We won’t be here long enough for it to actually affect us in a meaningful way.

Speak for yourself. I'm going to live to 200.

I'm actually a fan of electric vehicles. I love the Taycan. But that comes from me being a tech guy, not a car guy. I'm a fan of the electric vehicles the same way I'm a fan of blockchain, and OLED's, and drones. I love hybrids as well and believe that my 2nd gen NSX is the best car ever built when weighing all the factors. That said, I almost never drive it and most of my miles happen in air cooled 911's and 912's. "Best" is not always the answer.

As for AOC (MABA - Make Alexandria Bartend Again) and her green new deal, I don't even pay attention any more. With the limitations of our power grids (which are already over-stressed), combined with the fact that electricity isn't as clean as some like to claim, combined with the fact that zero-emission fuels are already here, combined with the fact that there are over a billion dino-powered vehicles around the world, it's obvious that the GND is nothing more than a set of talking points for the uninformed, the naive, and those trying to manipulate public opinion. Me? I prefer to live in reality and spend my time thinking about things that might actually happen.

I went to a little known engineering school called the Cooper Union. It was founded by a guy called Peter Cooper. He invented the first steam train called the Tom Thumb. It was designed to complete with horse drawn trains (horse drawn - Yes they were a thing). He also invested in land and ran a glue factory. His glue factory invented a gelatin substance for which he had a patent. Sold the patent on “gelatin” to a guy who invented Jello. Also was the first guy to use structural steel in NYC and invented a round elevator which he thought was the future.

The horse is now relegated to Santa Anita and Churchill Downs. I think there are still a few steam trains in America and a few in Europe (basically for fun). Been replaced by diesel locomotives and electric. Gasoline cars will be replaced by electric and then hydrogen power. So we are now sitting on the edge of Nostalgia.

Us Supreme Court just let a suit continue for the relatives of a Jewish Grandmother who the Nazi Reich stole a painting from. Simple Parisian street scene in the rain worth an estimated thirty million. Question is whether a 1965 911 Porsche will someday be worth three or four million? Frank has his livelihood hitched to our mechanical possessions. I for one see mine as my “Pissaro Street Scene” but not my daily transportation 10 years from now.

The world would be a better place if Putin didn’t control a gasoline resource that he threatens all of Europe with. But then again windmills kill eagles and to some degree electricity starts with carbon pollution at least for now. But I’m tired of shoveling shit against the tide. At 79 I won’t be around to see the outcome. However, I sure could see myself driving an electric Macan or the electric Taycan GT wagon. I’m tired, but not Don Quixote.

On an unusual note the list of Ethanol free gas stations in NJ has grown (surprise). But remember Peter Cooper when you have that Jello with whipcream for desert. Nothing is forever. Least of all our earth. Frank pad your retirement portfolio with stock in companies that make multi meters

Here's a great perspective on AOC's green new deal: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RIOiGtO2UBA

Fortunately, not all automakers are giving up on the combustion engine. I think they'll be around for the foreseeable future. https://carbuzz.com/news/koenigsegg-...y-volcano-fuel

Passed an automobile today in foyer if my car club dating from a time when things were still being worked out.

It dates from 1893 so several years before Benz patent for petrol engine and five years before his wifes’s famous journey.

Designed and made in Scotland by the Edinburgh University graduate engineer the son of Christian Salvesen the founder of the well known shipping business.

It’s one for for those who enjoy originality

In 2107 the car pictured took over 12 hrs, 400kg of coal and 700 gallons of water to complete the RAC’s London to Brighton Veteran run a journey of just 62 miles.

Seem to recall one of my first cars an old banger used to use that much water!

Iam not afraid of technology ... i do worry about the step on a crack break your mommas back types that get enraged when they go shopping and can't find the style they bought 5 years earlier and through a hissy fit...........
I don't know how you can't be positive about the future when you look at all of the incredible inventions and advancements particularly in our lifetime.
do not be afraid that your collector car will be outlawed or confiscated. the collector car culture has too much to offer to be cast aside no matter what advancements may come down the line

They're already outlawing gas powered lawn equipment in Commiefornia...what makes you think your cars will be safe?

You must have not grown up on a farm...or anywhere with some land. Yeah, your electric lawnmower might be good for a tiny residential lawn, try mowing a few acres with it and let me know how you like it!

I’m not down on tech. Electric cars are not green when you consider the mining required for the batteries, and the limited recycle infrastructure. Only 15% of cell phones and computers are recycled. Reported by the ultra right wing group, the Sierra Club. The average E car has around a 1000 pounds of incredibly nasty stuff in those batteries. They last about 10 years then what? To replace them might equal the cost of the 10 year old car. Do you want to buy one of those. If someone wants a E car fine. Just don’t tell me it’s green. 85% of the grid is still powered by carbon of some type. And I don’t see the massive investment in upgrading the grid at this point. Oh and 007 was just having a little fun with people who think their car is green. Kind of like the guys who buy carbon credits thinking that makes their jet green. By the way, the same people in the 70’s wrote articles for Time Magazine on the coming ice age. This planet’s environment has constantly changed throughout it’s history. And we weren’t around buggering it up.
