Hello Frank,
Over the time the diameter of the holes changes in regions of the seat with high tension of the Vinyl. The original size is shown on the Vinyl overhang.
Here pictures of original Vinyl of a Recaro race bucket 1968 with different perforation diameters according to the tension.

Additional pictures of an all original like NOS 1967 Recaro race bucket.

The dimpels are caused by 2 reasons in my opinion:
First and major effect has the woven colth fabric on the Vinyl's back side in combination with the correlation of webbing direction and direction of the diamond type perforation.
Second and minor effect may have the direction of the fabric hole punching.

But it's important that 67 vinyl is different to 68 vinyl. 67 was less dimpling and 68 is softer. However Recaro did offer different vinyl qualities with Göppinger Gekalux (only black&brown) as top of the line vinyl. for 40,60 DM surcharge. Comppare this to the 15DM they took for BMW 4Cyl. Material or 25.- DM for BMW 6 Cyl Material. Middles in Pepita were 8.50 DM (all without headrest they were a separate item on your bill)

I can't check the Vinyl differences 1967 and 1968 for the Recaro Sports seats right now, but for the 1967 and 1968 Recaro Race bucket, The Vinyl is the same for both Recaro Race buckets in 1967 and 1968 concerning surface, thickness and softness.

I was just driving my son's 2017 VW and noticed that the perforation on the seat covers is exactly what is needed. The machine is out there some where.
