Here's one of mine, aluminum wheel with a 4 digit stamp. Based on the theories 37th week of 1965 would be the obvious conclusion.

I have owned this for close to 20 years and "was told" that it was a 1966 wheel. I don't have a VDM "decoder" ring...so how you get 1966 out of a 1118 sure beats me. Unless of course this was the 11th week of 1918 which would obviously make this an uber-rare prototype.

So I just read the thread over on 912BB and IF I understand the interpretation of the "rules" correctly and IF the two digit rule stands...this wheel would be June 1967, not July 1967?
Help me here...if I am going to become obsessed, I want to get it correct.

Original wheel from '65 911 #301100 stamped 1288. Clearly not a date code would be my guess.

Here is one that I believe is close to a date code, March, 68. The wheel was bought from Porsche dealer with receipt dated May, 68.

If you are looking for a database of wood wheels and their numbers, here is another.

Wood wheel off of a 1968 912, the wheel was listed on the window sticker as a $48.30 option.

Looks to have an original stamp of 3 67 with an overstamp of 9 and a 5 stamped above on black rim.

And an additional stamp of 802 B on black rim.

For those keeping score. If I had to guess the likelihood of these stamps being date codes I'd guess:

                  3-digit - Probable
                  2-digit - Possible
                  4-digit - Unlikely

Of course, completely open to bring incorrect.

What’s the built date on your 68 912?

if it’s shortly after September, 67, it will support a possible date code.

I don't have the Kardex but it is a Karman coupe with a SN in the low -1200's if that helps. Most likely USA delivered 12/67-1/68.

That so many of these wheels have only a 3 or 4 digit number (serif font) stamp always suggested to me it's a production mark. Admittedly, we've only owned three cars that came with wooden wheels, so I'm truly uninformed but none of them had any other markings, and none of the numbers worked as date codes. Here's an extended hub alloy wheel Frank bought awhile ago stamped "1959". I get even more puzzled by things like the "802 b" wheel above.

Sooner or later, someone else will own them all...

Upon further reflection (and some basic math) I retract the theory that this wheel could have been manufactured in the 37th week of 1965 as the car it came on, 301100, was delivered in the 18th week of 1965.

It's looking grim for the 4-digits being date codes.

I feel more comfortable with three digits numbers if it has a space between the month and year, example 9 67.

If that's on the yellow car, can I ask a favor for the diameter of the wood "rim" itself? It's been said that the wood in 1968 is "fatter".

                                tks,
