I thought the jack base became black sometime in 67. My 67S SWT had its original jack which had the black base. Re: Eric's note above about his blue jack in his 67S SWT. Given some unknown number of jacks of this era were placed by the dealer, not the factory, we might never know exactly when blue became black at the base. I also had two late production 912s, 5 numbers apart, Karmann built, that had black base jacks. Of course this probably doesn't mean jack.......

      well, then...

I had my jack taken out for color checking, but the area is too small to get an electronic read out.
Following the meeting at the paint specialists I had Bilstein marketing department contacted, but learned, that Bilstein had sold the entity to Brano subsidiary in Wolfsburg. This company is inactive since 2020 and deleted from the company registered lists.
The parent company is in Cheslovakia, so I have send them a mail.....

Alternative plans are now: find another Bilstein jack with a larger area 2,5x2,5cm so the "read-out" tool can verify the color mixture....
      I´ll report back

Here is a photo of a jack that I just restored for a friend and fellow early 911 (1965) owner. As mentioned in an earlier post, the blue base is a home brew of two blues, a gloss black and a couple drops of yellow. I compare the end result to an original base that I keep for that purpose.

I consider myself fairly knowlegeable re the 356 jacks and the very early 911 jacks. I have never seen an original, pre 1971 911 jack with a black base. However, I have seen jacks that have been restored incorrectly with black bases, black shafts, etc.

i had some old bilsteins with original color sourced in order to get enough material to determine the color coding.

The one is a 312GB, said to be from the 40ies. The 312 series was used for the BMW KS 750 series and after WWII also for the BMW Isetta and more. It could handle up to 1250kg.

The second one is a EL20, which could lift up to 2000kg.

Together with my 901 type jack I went to the color guys to do an electronic read out. This was more difficult than I thought, but at least I do have a result.

The color match is from the scale group

Sikkens 470 G1 - this was the first trail, but not correct, please to see the entry below for corrected color shade.

I have a 2K spray now made, so I will had this over to a restorer, who has quite some in need to get the correct color.

I also had the VW L360 mixed and sprayed on a card and this is way off and does not even come close to match.

It is difficult to take proper pics, as the 470G1 is too shiny and reflects too hard in comparison the the matte surface of the old jacks.

well, now I can recommend the more correct color tone for the base of the jack. I purchased one more jack, went back to the color studio and we worked for nearby one hour.

result is now pretty pretty close - I would say 95% - the 5% missing is the perfect analysis in a laboratory…

on the one pic i moved the hue controller a bit more to blue ….

              color tone is
              Akzo Nobel Sikkens Color Map
              Blue, Uni
              468 G1

I have again made a 2K version, this time in matte.

              enjoy

                Please do keep in mind:
as written in the 356registry there are different hues out, depending on the year of production…
„Bilstein used three different shades of blue on the jacks, ….They used the lightest blue on jacks from mid fifities too about 1961. Then a bit darker blue with the last of the T5's to the end of 1963. It seems that they then went to the the darkest blue with C jack's. „
                Bob Lee on the 356reg.

I have the lighter blue version also available as a two sample jacks with original color, but have not determined these yet.

Haul, the color is a very close match. Nice! It looks like the paint was applied with a brush. For best results I use an airbrush.

                      Well, thank you,
Iuckily I had several original samples, this made it possible to really come very very close to the original.

Concerning the paint method: maybe they used a brush, but I did deliver a 2k spraycan to them…

                      best regards from bavaria

I find that many people who use paint in a spray can, including myself, have a tendency to over do it. I have much better control using my airbrush. As a result of these posts everal people have sent me their bases for me to paint them and one early jack to restore. If this keeps up I might have to mix up more of my special brew.
