I like coppa floria a lot too...

Yes, the Alfa is blue - that was my wife's choice completely... I really stayed out of that one... Her car, her colour choice... It is a colour that Lamborghini used for a couple of Miuras... Stunning in the sun...

That's why I was thinking i might go with green this time...

    • LET’S GET TO THE HEART OF THE MATTER:

While I was trying to decide on colours…

We needed a 3.0 liter engine – basically the heart of 1235’s transformation…

Originally, we were considering a RoW 76/77 Carrera 3.0 engine as the basis for a 2.8SS, as I wanted a free revving engine that needed to be able to rev reliably to 8,000 RPM…

After a lot of thought and discussion, we ultimately decided on building a 3.0 liter RSR high butterfly MFI engine… So, we were looking for an SC donor, as they have the more robust, heavier 930 turbo 9 bolt crankshaft w 59.9mm mains… the C3 has 6 bolt crankshaft with 56.9mm mains, which is still pretty stout and reliable, but it would probably easier to find an SC…

And, we ended up finding a 1983, type 930/16, USA/Canada, SC engine in Germany a couple of days later…

      • The shop was willing to sell the long block, basically the engine minus everything above and below the heads for 6,500 euros… So that was the engine hopefully sorted… It arrived at Differs a couple days later, and didn’t look too bad…

          • YOU SPIN ME RIGHT ROUND BABY RIGHT ROUND:

We were debating whether or not to replace the 901 gearbox that came with 1235 with a 915 gearbox… I love 901 gearboxes… I raced with the 901… And I actually like the shift pattern… And I never had an issue with the 901 while racing with 3.0 MFI in California… But I did change them regularly, as I had different gearboxes with different ratios for each circuit I raced at.. And I would open them up to inspect them quite regularly… And with our “north star” in mind, I acquiesced to a 915…

Now we were debating which model of 915 to use… Magnesium for lightness or Aluminum for strength… We could decide R/P – 8/31 or 8/35, as the 7/31 is a bit weaker, and individual ratios later, as we would need the final engine HP & Torque numbers to calculate…

After much research and discussion, we decided to go for a magnesium gearbox as the basis for our build for the lighter weight… And a few days later we found what was supposed to be a rebuilt type 915/61 from 1977 – the last of the magnesium cases close by in Germany…

The price was reasonable, so we went ahead...

            • And the teardown and inspection… A few surprises found, but since we planned a complete overhaul and upgrades, it wasn’t that big of an issue…

                • GOT TO KEEP COOL:

One of the early decisions was to have a full RSR front oil cooler… Elephant Racing supplied the parts, and the guys at Differs did a mock installation to be sure everything was there and fit before painting…

With new door skins on both doors, the holes for the outside mirror needed to be drilled before painting… Nice Emaile Blue SWB 912 modified with a 911 6-cylinder engine in the foreground…

                          • DETAILS, DETAILS…

With 1235 about ready to go for primer… we still had decision on final colour… And parts to purchase…

Seats… We decided on ST replica seats, with basket weave and perforated bolsters from D’eser with 6 point Schroth harnesses… Both seats would be adjustable… The passenger seat would get a tilt bracket for access to the rear, and the driver seat would be mounted lower without tilt mechanism… We would also install standard 3 point belts for any extended driving… “north star”…
